Study Says Paid Sick Days is Beneficial
Scott Whipple (New Britain Herald)

A study released Monday indicates that the proposed paid sick days bill awaiting a vote by the state Senate would save businesses more than it would cost.

During a press conference at the state Capitol, the National Partnership for Women and Families, Working Families and ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) released an in-depth economic impact analysis of the proposed Paid Sick Days legislation, SB 217.

The Paid Sick Days bill, SB 217, would allow Connecticut workers at companies of 25 employees or more to earn one hour of sick time for every 40 hours worked, or 6½ days of sick time a year for a full-time employee. Employees could use those paid sick days to take care of themselves or a child in the event of illness.

The study indicates the following:

- The 25-employee threshold in the proposed legislation protects most small “Mom and Pop” businesses. In fact, setting a threshold any higher risks exempting nearly all food-service employees, undermining the public-health protections.

- Even with access to seven paid sick days per year, most employees will only take a few.

- The savings to businesses associated with paid sick days outweigh the costs.
